NCSC Staff and Cybersecurity Experts Ride 60 miles for The Cyber Helpline

  • The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) staff and cybersecurity industry colleagues embarked on a charity bike ride from Cheltenham to Birmingham ahead of CYBERUK 2024, on May 12th.

  • The challenging 60-mile route raised £9,472 in funds for The Cyber Helpline.

  • NCSC hosted the flagship CYBERUK conference at the ICC Birmingham on 13–15 May 2024, showcasing the ride and its success.

Over 30 cybersecurity specialists from the UK’s world-leading cyber security agency NCSC, swapped their office chairs for cycling saddles on Sunday, May 12th to raise money for victims of cybercrime.

Organised by The Cyber Helpline, the first-ever CyberCycle ride brought together members of the wider cybersecurity community to pedal between Cheltenham and the ICC Birmingham in time for CYBERUK 2024, which took place in the city between 13 – 15 May.

The gruelling 60-mile route, which saw wheelers pass Cheltenham’s world-famous racecourse, through the Cotswold countryside, and alongside Birmingham’s canals, raising over £9,000 pounds for The Cyber Helpline.

Cyber security really is a team sport, and the CyberCycle participants were proud to raise both awareness of and funding for The Cyber Helpline.

‘Hearing the harrowing stories of those helped by The Cyber Helpline was motivation enough to get involved, but the support we received from colleagues across the industry was remarkable. We’re truly grateful for those who supported this event – those who cycled, those who provided support and those who contributed to the fundraising. Thank you’.

At The Cyber Helpline, our charity provides free expert support for victims of cyber crime and online harm in the UK and USA. This includes supporting individuals and sole traders who have had their online accounts hacked, victims of cyber bullying, cyberstalking, and online harassment, as well as those who have fallen foul of scammers.

The impact of online crime can have a damaging impact on victims, including financial losses, emotional and psychological distress, and feelings of social isolation.

IMPACT

The funds raised through CyberCycle will be spent directly on supporting more victims of cybercrime, digital fraud and online harm. The funding will enable us to hire an additional 12 volunteers and provide the tools, training and support needed for them to work on our Helpdesk. Each volunteer is estimated to help around 100 victims and families every year. This means the fundraiser will enable us to help 1,200 additional victims of cybercrime.

Victims aided by The Cyber Helpline report the charity’s support having a great impact on their online confidence, their ability to return to their normal day-to-day life, as well as an improvement on their mental health.

The Cyber Helpline is currently handling over two thousand cases per month. Donate to our cause today.
