Supporting Victims and Empowering Recovery - CyberAwareness Month 2024

As the digital world continues to grow, so do the threats within it. Cybercrime is no longer just an online inconvenience—it’s a serious issue affecting real lives, families, and communities. In recognition of Cyber Awareness Month this October, The Cyber Helpline is launching a crucial campaign to raise £50,000 to expand and enhance our vital services for victims of online harm.

In the past year alone, we’ve seen a 120% increase in victim reports, reflecting a sharp rise in cybercrime incidents. The numbers are staggering, and the need for support has never been more urgent. This October, we are asking for your help to ensure that every victim of cybercrime can access the assistance they need to recover and rebuild their lives.

Why Cybercrime is a Growing Threat

Cybercrime is no longer an isolated issue. It’s affecting people on a personal and profound level, creating ripple effects that extend beyond the individual. In fact, cybercrime now accounts for over 50% of all crime in the UK, yet a shocking 87% of victims receive no formal help from authorities.

Here are some alarming statistics:

  • Over 70% of cybercrime victims experience significant impacts on their mental health and daily lives.

  • 61% of victims report that the crime has deeply affected their families, causing emotional and psychological distress.

One victim, Mary, 32, shared her story:
"My heart is racing. I don’t know what to do, and I don’t feel safe anymore."

Tim, 45, reflected on his experience after falling victim to an online scam:
"I ran out of money. I got scammed and lost all my savings. I don’t know what to do."

These stories are just a glimpse into the real-world consequences of cybercrime. It's not just an attack on data or finances—it’s an attack on well-being, peace of mind, and security.

How The Cyber Helpline is Making a Difference

At The Cyber Helpline, we are dedicated to supporting victims of cybercrime and guiding them through the recovery process. With more than 2,000 victims reaching out to us every month, we’ve seen firsthand the critical need for comprehensive, accessible support.

Bridget, 37, explained how our team helped her seek justice:
"The Helpline Responder helped my case get resolved. My perpetrator is now going to court over the crimes committed against me."

Sandy, 24, shared how our immediate response made a difference in her life:
"Yesterday, my perpetrator was named and taken into custody to be interviewed, and their devices were seized. My abuse has stopped. Thank you for being so readily available online."

Our work helps victims regain control of their lives, but with cybercrime on the rise, we need your support to scale our efforts and continue offering this lifeline to those in need.
